Everyone needs to look after their bones with
 
  • A good diet
  • Exercise
  • An awareness of how to avoid falls
 
But, some people are at particular risk and we are trying to identify them so that we can target them for specific treatments such as the Bisphosphonates.
 
We know most of the main risk factors for osteoporosis.
 
If you answer YES to any of the following, you should discuss with your GP or Practice Nurse whether you need a Dexa Scan.
 
  • Have you had a previous broken hip or wrist?
  • Do you have a family history of osteoporosis?
  • Did your mother break a hip?
  • Have you had to take Prednisolone or other steroid tablets for more than 3 months?
  • Do you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hyperthyroidism, Chronic Liver Disease, Malabsorption or Hyperparathyroidism?
  • Do you weigh less than 58 kg (9 st)?
  • Did you have your menopause before the age of 45?
  • Have you ever had anorexia nervosa?
  • Do you smoke?
